The weekly tally in India is currently around 1200 COVID cases.

"In order to track the variants through the Indian SARS-COV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) network, it is critical to ramp up the whole genome sequencing of positive case samples. This is due to the sudden increase in cases being observed in Japan, the United States of America, Republic of Korea, Brazil, & China.

Such an exercise will enable for the prompt detection of newer varieties, if any, circulating throughout the country, as well as the implementation of necessary public health actions." Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan stated

The designated INSACOG Genome Sequencing Laboratories (IGSLs), which are mapped to the States and UTs, are to receive samples of all positive cases on a daily basis, inasmuch as possible, from all states, Further he stated.

According to the Health Ministry's guidelines for surveillance, the INSACOG network of more than 50 laboratories in the nation has only recently begun sequencing specific samples, such as positive cases found in 2% of randomly tested international passengers, samples from designated sentinel sites, and samples from any cluster or outbreak in the community.
